Much as I would have liked to see our boys kick the living crap out of
Russian asses, I don't think that would have been a fruitful strategy.
It would have given Putin the excuse to send in the big guns like with
Georgia, with the resulting massive bloodshed. I think Ukraine was
really in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. Perhaps
there was a glimmer of hope in a peaceful solution if our boys did not
shoot, giving Putin some wriggle room to make a dignified retreat. Of
course, now the Russians are even more entrenched, and massive bloodshed
may be inevitable, anyway. But we do have the rest of the world on our
side. For what it's worth.
