Had the inept governments since 1991 invested in developing, extracting and
marketing the oil and gas deposits in the Black and Azov Seas the economy
of the nation would not have sunk to the level that it has and would have
been energy independent years ago. This is what Putin is after: his aim is
to occupy Crimea and southern Ukraine so as to sink his claws into the oil
and gas deposits so as to prevent a competitor(independent Ukraine) from
selling oil and gas from their own territory at competitive rates against
Gazprom.

Although exploration and development of these resources outside of the
United States are still in the early stages, Chevron is acquiring shale

Crimea’s hastily organized vote this weekend on whether to leave Ukraine to
join Russia is threatening Black Sea oil and natural gas drilling prospects
coveted by Exxon Mobil Corp. and Eni SpA.

Should Chornomornaftohaz cease to be Ukrainian, Kiev would lose a key asset
in its efforts to reduce its rising dependency on Russian gas imports.
Ukraine uses more than 50 billion cubic meters of gas a year, worth around
$20 billion in current European market terms, more than half of which it
has to import from Russia.
Disputes between Russia and Ukraine have previously led to supply cuts,
triggering efforts in Kiev to develop new domestic sources in the form of
onshore shale as well as offshore in the Black Sea
Russia's Gazprom, disregarding European Commission plans to delay talks,
said it expected to sign deals this month on building its major South
Stream pipeline to carry gas to central and southern Europe without
crossing Ukraine.

The Bulgarian and Romanian natural sectors are characterized by several
features, including wide prospects for establishing themselves as a
regional natural gas hub, as well as optimistic findings concerning
offshore gas production.

give statements and show the real objective of the protests.
Romanian President Traian Basescu stated during a show on *B1

“No question, Gazprom
<http://www.naturalgaseurope.com/news?keyword=gazprom>benefits from
Romania<http://www.naturalgaseurope.com/category/news-by-country/other-countries/romania>not
exploiting gas in the Black Sea or shale gas, because we might became
an exporter and can supply gas to a part of Gazprom current market.”
Basescu explained that Russia does not want an energy independent Romania.
And the fact that “in the west (western part of the country) we have no
Gazprom protests and we do not have protests because Lukoil has a
concession in the Black Sea; nothing that is Russian is touched, wherever
Americans are there are protests” is enough to place question marks over
the protests against Chevron exploitation.

Past price disputes between Russia and Ukraine have led to the Russians
cutting off supply, prompting Kiev to spur development of its own resources
including onshore shale gas and Black Sea fields.
Ukraine failed to pay Russian gas company Gazprom $440 million by a
deadline on Friday, sparking fresh concerns Gazprom could switch off
supplies like it did in 2009.
