Saw same question in the comment section of the Huffington Post site. Seems that historic banners are honored as part of the history of that particularbattalion, which would have been an object of pride from WW11. It is not a flag of the USSR even though its presence still raises my blood pressure.
My first reaction was also one of disbelief until I read the explanation. Now, I wonder if a Russian soldier would tear it up or shoot at it? It represents a historical transition from a Soviet to a Ukrainian battalion, a Crimean symbol of a shared history. Yeh! Just one demonstration of how the Russians are denied their history or cultural rights.
