*It follows, therefore, that it will be only a matter of time before his
lieutenants come to realize that the commands of a madman need not be
obeyed, and in fact that duty demands that they be disobeyed. It is only a
matter of days or weeks before all those around Vladimir Putin arrive at
the conviction that the salvation of Russia requires his removal from
office. Every leader is capable of losing his capacity to govern, and
every subordinate has the obligation to recognize that loss of capacity,
and to remove that incapacitated leader from power. The duty of obeying a
command is subordinate to the duty to stop an incapacitated commander from
issuing invalid commands.*

"Fascist" has indeed become a crude political insult, and the term can be
used to cover states ranging from Peron's Argentina to Nazi Germany. But
the charge of fascism carries a particular force in the formerly Soviet
space. World War II is the one sacral achievement that must not be
questioned in Russia. To suggest that there are those in power in Ukraine
who attack its accomplishments or indeed seek to reverse them is to plug
into anger. Hence its value as a weapon to the Kremlin. But the record
shows that while it would be a stretch to describe today's Russia as
fascist, there are elements in its bloodstream that should disqualify
Moscow from so slandering others.

Britain, open for business, no longer has a "mission." Any moralizing
remnant of the British Empire is gone; it has turned back to the pirate
England of Sir Walter Raleigh. Britain's ruling class has decayed to the
point where its first priority is protecting its cut of Russian money --
even as Russian armored personnel carriers rumble around the streets of
Sevastopol. But the establishment understands that, in the 21st century,
what matters are banks, not tanks.
The Russians also understand this. They know that London is a center of
Russian corruption, that their loot plunges into Britain's empire of tax
havens -- from Gibraltar to Jersey, from the Cayman Islands to the British
Virgin Islands -- on which the sun never sets.
British residency is up for sale. "Investor visas" can be purchased,
starting at 1 million ($1.6 million). London lawyers in the Commercial
Court now get 60 percent of their work from Russian and Eastern European
clients. More than 50 Russia-based companies swell the trade at London's
Stock Exchange. The planning regulations have been scrapped, and along the
Thames, up go spires of steel and glass for the hedge-funding class.

The Russian-speaking citizens of Ukraine are not being humiliated or
discriminated against, their civil rights have not been limited.
Meanderings about "forced Ukrainization" and "bans on the Russian language"
that have been so common in Russian media are on the heads of those who
invented them. Your certainty of the growth of anti-Semitism in Ukraine
also does not correspond to the actual facts. It seems you have confused
Ukraine with Russia, where Jewish organizations have noticed growth in
anti-Semitic tendencies last year.
