I believe that if Putin invades Ukraine proper it will cost a lot of lives,
but ultimately it will be a complete disaster for Putin and for Russia. I
do not believe you can make 45 million people behave like good obedient
Little Russians, especially after such a monumental reawakening as we had
during Euromaidan - no matter how hard you try. There will be massive
resistance and it will have near 100% support of the local population.
Even a ruthless despot like Stalin had a hard time putting a lid on
something like that, and Putin ain't no Stalin. He may think he is, but he
is not. He does not quite have the level of terror and fear to keep
everyone around him in check during trying and difficult times.
The other scenario that has Russian troups just lingering around the
boarder, on-going intimidation along with fifth column work to disrupt the
upcoming elections is a much safer strategy for Putin to pursue. But then
again, maybe he really has lost his head, and completely pumped up and
drunk on hyper-nationalism, that he will go for the all or nothing option.
Let's hope not.
