In the fall of 1996, Olshanskyi and Sahaidachnyi visited Norfolk Naval Base in Virginia as guests of the US Navy. They had a very rouigh Atlantic crossing and were the first and only (as far as I know) ex-Soviet ships to anchor in an American base. Those of us priveleged to visit can still remember that warm good black bread the baker on Olshanskyi gifted to us from the diaspora.

Both captains were true patriots and it is a shame that they had to leave the service due to the politicking in Kyiv. These are the professional type of officers, two among hundreds, that unwillingly resigned their commissions and now Ukraine feels their loss.

An attack at Ukrainian ship Olshanskyi is going on. Several reports say Russians overpowered the remaining 20 Ukrainian marines protecting the ship.
