It seems President Lukashenko is starting to waffle about
his support for Russia.
Of course, he is concerned that Belarus would be next after
Ukraine, thus self-interest is kicking in.
According to a Globe & Mail article today:
Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko, a close ally
of Russia, accepted on Sunday that Crimea was now "de
facto" a part of Russia, but he criticised the annexation
as a "bad precedent".
Speaking to reporters in Minsk, Lukashenko said Ukraine,
which shares a long land border with Belarus, should
remain "a single, indivisible, integral, non-bloc state".
I think Lukashenko is probably now reconsidering the Eurasian
Union. Earlier in the month the President of Kazakhstan was
showing signs of doubt.
Putin had played his cards earlier than planed because of the
fear of losing Ukraine and thus the Naval bases in Crimea.
