The borders are huge -- 1500 miles of many roads, dirt roads, all
flat land, no fences, no ditches, no natural barriers such as
rivers. Easier said than done.
The Yanks have a tough time with the border with mexico and
that has many natural barriers too.
One could dilute ones army to patrol the border OR one could
keep one's army in fast mobile units designed to address any
armoured invasion of Ukraine.
Polands border works because it is a huge barbed wire border
with a wide swath of land cleared and regularly patrolled. Motion
sensors help detect intrusions in unauthorized crossing points.
This is something that can be rectified in 1-2 weeks. This is
something that needs to be thoroughly planned, layed out and
that will take months at very minimum.
Then remember the shore of Ukraine against the Sea of Azov is
a wide open entry point from the sea.
Then there is Belarus.
and Transdniester too.
It is a matter of allocation of sparse resources.
