In the 2005 movie, Lord of War (starring Nicholas Cage), about the smuggling of weapons from Ukraine to African wars (based loosely on the real weapons smuggler, Viktor Bout), Jared Leto plays the role of Vitaly Orlov, the younger brother of Yuri Orlov (Cage). There are many references to Ukraine in the movie.

He then turned to international politics, saying

“To all the dreamers out there all around the world watching this tonight, in places like Ukraine and Venezuela, I want to say, we are here, and as you struggle to make your dreams happen, to live the impossible, we’re thinking of you tonight.”

It’ll be interesting to see if other actors follow his lead as the U.S. struggles to shape its response to Russia’s incursions into Ukraine this weekend.

Several hundred million people are watching the Academy Awards around the globe tonight.

Thank you to Best Supporting Actor winner Jared Leto for bringing attention to Ukraine during his acceptance speech.

Putin was afraid that Ukraine might be mentioned during the Academy awards and therefore he banned it from being broadcast live throughout Russia today.
