Well it certainly does look like it is about to get very tense and ugly
from here on in. The Cecescue scenerio, which I would have pegged in
yesterday's stagnant state as still in the "unlikely" category, today may
have shifted over to "possibly" - if not higher. I simply cannot envision
large amounts of devoted Yanukovych followers willing to tag along
asYanukovych beats Ukrainians to a pulp in order to keep his mafia empire
and stolen goods in tact. There is nothing really binding all the bandits
together except money and bribes - and that does not as we have seen with
the failed anti-Maidan, get you very far. Yanuk is probably gambling that
if he can instill enough fear and intimidation to a critical mass of the
population in a series of decisive and quick blows, he'll be in the clear -
at least for a while. But what if he mis-calculated the mood, anger and
determination of the people? What if they stand up after being beaten
down, or if, as we have seen, it only stiffens the resolve and even more
people rise up in response? What will he do then? Call-in papa Putin for
reinforcements?
